Trade unionist and politician. A farm worker from Somerset, Bevin formed a branch of the Dockers’ Union in Bristol in 1910. He worked with Tillett to form the Transport and General Workers Union, and was its first General Secretary (1921-40). A leading organiser of the General Strike in 1926, Bevin was active in negotiating a settlement. In 1937 Bevin was elected chairman of the Trades Union Congress.
