Son of well-known Quaker preachers and writers. Smith went to Harvard and Balliol College, Oxford, where he was influenced by the aesthetics of Walter Pater. The publication of his first book, The Youth of Parnassus (1895), brought him the friendship of the poet Robert Bridges, and later they inaugurated the Society for Pure English, which was launched in 1919.
