The second and most gifted of three brothers known as ‘the Smiths of Chichester’. He studied under his brother William (1707-64). He was patronised by the Duke of Richmond and was admired for his landscapes both at home and abroad. He received prizes from the Society of Arts for his landscapes in 1760 and subsequently.
