Born in Cornwall, he moved to London in 1779 where he worked on jewellery designs and the enamelling of watches and fans. He began to exhibit miniatures at the Royal Academy in 1781. Bone’s technique began with a pencil copy of the chosen picture onto squared paper. This would be traced with red chalk onto the enamel surface that would then be fired to fix the chalk outline.
